I really enjoy travelling around the world, but with every journey I take a risk that I’ll be hit by a natural disaster or be the victim of a terrorist attack. As everyone knows the climate is changing and the natural hazards grow more than ever. Storms, hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes are stronger and more dangerous.
People can’t change the weather, but everyone should be ready and prepared for the upcoming events as much as he can. The only way to fail is not taking the action. So to be informed, trained and prepared is the best way how to survive and protect your own family and property.

What do experts recommend you to have during a man-made or natural disaster? Here are several of the emergency essentials counseled by specialists in the field:
- Light, of course
- Signaling device, such as a flare
- Parachute cord–can have multiple uses
- Energy bars–compact, high nutrition with a long shelf life
- Blanket—in case of heat cutoff and underground conditions
- Water purification tablets—clean water is essential to life
- Garbage bag—could also have multiple uses but garbage will be created and must be removed from your premises
- knife—needed for many tasks, compact
- Tin foil—multiple uses, including use in preparing food
- Toilet paper—no comment needed
- Hand sanitizer—good to have, especially in case of bio-medical disaster
- Duct tape—its multiple uses will really come in handy during this time
- Laminated card with important contact numbers—must be protected from inclement weather
- Light rain coat—again, in case of bad weather
- Water—lots needed here, in economic bottles
- Canned or freeze-dried food—many possibilities here. Look for long shelf life and items that you can actually stomach over a long period of time.
- GPS or compass—outside might look very different and you will need help with your sense of direction or finding a new place where survivors are to meet
- Lighter—fire will be need at some point during the ordeal, rest assured
- Cell phone—hopefully the towers still work
- Bug spray—bugs in your shelter or outside can make life even more miserable during this trying time
- First aid kit—in case of injuries incurred during the disaster or its aftermath
- Basic medications—extra pain reliever, allergy relief, etc. The pharmacy will probably not be open during a disaster.
Some guides to emergency essentials add a few more items to this list, but this set gives you an excellent start to your compilation of emergency essentials. Don’t forget that putting together such a kit will probably be impossible once the disaster strikes.
It will be too late; people will rush the grocery stores for water and canned goods and clear out the shelves. No, the time to put together your supply of emergency essentials is now, when all is calm and no one is predicting an imminent disaster.
Survival Equipment
As I said before, my plan is made for the most common natural or other events in my current location. But that’s only the half of the truth. I can be perfectly prepared for the emergency at home, but what if I’m not there? What if I’m not with my family at the critical time? This is a part of my plan too. I have learned what to do in that case of danger. Disaster preparedness is another useful chapter.
Another step is to set up an emergency kit with the supplies after the research of the potential dangers. Although there should be a dozen items in the kit, some of them are necessary for survival equipment as is flashlight, radio – battery operated, batteries, dusk mask, pocket knife, local map and more.
Crucial emergency essentials supplies are water, food, first aid and energy power. I have ready enough water for at least 5 days for four people. This is for case when other water supplies may be contaminated. There is also possibility that there will be more people inside the shelter during the emergency. What if someone else needs help? I’ll be happy to give a helping hand.
It is the same with the food. But beside the water, food must be selected carefully. I almost always expect the worst scenario that there will be no power which means no refrigerator. There will be no time to grab any food or not that much to survive at least for few a days. You should aim for the kinds of food with minimal salt, shelf-stable, food with long expiration date and with energy value.
All these stuff need the space and the best place for them is inside the shelter. I haven’t any supplies in my house, they are ready in my shelter. It is crucial to think ahead which situations the shelter will be built for. Then store inside there any essentials supplies. Are you ready to protect yourself and your family ?
